Default Good secondary monk professions

Hey there everyone, I tried to do a quick search but didnt really find any info, probably due to me not knowing the terms everyone uses in GW yet, but I've just bought GW, no expansions pack (yet) and I plan on rolling a monk and leveling with a friend who's playing a necromancer. I was wondering what your opinions were on a secondary profession for a monk, preferably I want something that can add to DPS and some energy regen would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Umm... monks aren't built to do DPS. You can run smite, but really you're inferior to most other classes for damage output. A monk secondary should usually be about survivability (Assassin/Warrior) or energy management (Mesmer/Elementalist).
As for energy management, some possible skills are:
[skill]Glyph of Lesser Energy[/skill]
[skill]Channeling[/skill]
[skill]Power Drain[/skill]

Also, people like signets as "passive" energy management since they save you energy you would've otherwise spent on healing.

Dude! You should totally run /E for Firestorm, /Me for Backfire, /R so you can use a pet, or maybe go /W and use Mending, Vital Blessing, Retribution, and Watchful Spirit, because, that's like twice the healing a W/Mo could use... There are so many great choices for monk secondaries, I'm sure you'll find one that suits your playing style.

DUDE! LOL!

Seriously though, I usually run Mo/E on my monk for Glyph of Lesser... I use Mo/Me in HA, but in every day PvE, I use Mo/E now more than anything else... unless going mo/me can give me an advantage (ie. mantra of frost vs foes that only do water dmg).

Listen to this Guy not the other 2 although they aren't totally off.You want /E or /Mes for energy if you are concerned for that and /A or /W for survivability.I have never played a Mo/A so I am not to familiar with the /A skills but I really know the /W and there some good survival skills in there like this [skill]Sprint[/skill]I may not last long as a Warrior but does get you out of a bad situation and there is [skill]Balanced Stance[/skill].I use this skill as well as most would use it for farming[skill]Bonetti's De fence[/skill] I only use it when I got someone hitting me.

Another war skill is [skill]Shield Bash[/skill]. And the skill you misspelled was [skill]Bonetti's Defense[/skill].

Assassin secondaries use skills like [skill]Dark Escape[/skill][skill]Return[/skill][skill]Shadow of Haste[/skill][skill]Dash[/skill].

You also could go /D for survivability and add these skills in: [skill]Conviction[/skill] [skill]Vital Boon[/skill]
Paired with a max shield and the +10 armor while enchanted insignia's will
give you a nice 60+24+8+10= 102 armor, while vital boon still keeps your health high .

If you go Mo/W you can also bring Defensive stance which will give you armour and chance to block attacks

Monks are horrible at dealing damage. I'd personally not bother with addingin extra damage and just go all healing.

I recommend mesmer as your secondary profession becauseinspiration magic helps with Energy management.

Also guys, he said he had only GW so he can't be assassin or dervish(unless he bought nightfall or something.

E-management is Mo/E.

Damage Dealing: [skill]shield of judgment[/skill][skill]aftershock[/skill] as a pure offensive monk.

If you just have prophecies going Mo/E for glyph or Mo/Me for channeling is probably best for keeping your energy up in PvE. You probably don't need to worry about using defensive skills from the warrior professionfor PvE, but Mo/W or Mo/A are pretty fun for arenas. Boon prot monks work pretty well too, so you could try going Mo/Me with Mantra of Recall or Mo/N with offering of blood.

I probably wouldn't bother with smites too much or trying to pump out damage with a monk. Also, if you're playing with a necro buddy, he can bring Blood Ritual and help out with energy regen if you need it.

I wouldn't use a booner in the Arenas as Mor and Oob aren't as good as they use to be and the same as devine boon.It is still viable but not that great as to why you don't others useing it and there are better builds out there today.It is ok in PVE to use a booner being boonprotect as the little extra 35 wouldn't be so bad.ZB however would out class boon for the most part.

Not even a Necromancer would use offering of blood as it would make more sence to use blood is power or well of blood.Mesmers wouldn't even think of mantra of recall anymore.

Normally I wouldn't use one, but if you would read what the original poster was saying, you would realise that he doesn't have any sort of expansions, and has access to prophecies skills only. They work well enough for pve at least.

I don't think necros would bother using BiP or well of blood to boost their own energy though...

BiP can not be used on the Castor like non elite form of BR.

BiP and BR cannot be used on caster.
Well of Power is the elite form of Well of Blood, which gives energy regen to those allies in the well.
Offering of Blood is not as good as it once was, thus it shouldn't be used.

ok lissen clearly dis might sound odd but Necro is the best secondary proffesion for monks let me give some examples

BiP,OoB,BR,SS for 55 and many more skills like shadow of fear still good if ur skill lvl is 0

There is one perk to Necro secondary which people don't seem to have overlooked-Plague Touch/Sending.

OoB used to be good, but it has been reduced too much, so not really useful anymore.

Its cold up here, so it takes me a while to ripen up.

BiP means you have wasted an elite.
OoB at lvl 12 blood magic reduces your own effectiveness as a healer or protector IMHO.

BR - if your other monk needs BR, that monk needs to know how to manage energy better (I'm not as green as this monk )

Yeah, your right, SS hitting me is so much more beneficial than me not being hit. LVL 16 SoJ is still good, considering you don't put in on yourself, its for the melee who can do nasty things to KD opponents.

Plague Sending on a warrior??? Plague Touch. Then again, W/Mo will remove crippling and rush in and hit you anyway. As for PvE, fine, you can't run anyway, but meh.

Anyway, as you say I'm green. I probably have missed a few logical things.
